The laundry room may not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of deep cleaning, but every October as part of the Clean Mama Routine’s Monthly Focus, I recommend doing a thorough deep clean. Here’s a step-by-step guide to deep cleaning your laundry room.
Declutter and Empty the Room
Before you can deep clean, you need a blank slate. Remove everything from the counters, empty the shelves, and pull out any movable appliances. This will give you an opportunity to declutter. Say goodbye to empty detergent bottles and those single socks waiting for their forever match.
Dust from Top to Bottom
Using a microfiber cloth or a duster, start at the top. Clean any ceiling fixtures or fans, then move on to the tops of shelves and appliances. Finish with baseboards and the floor. Remember to dust and vacuum under and behind your washer and dryer.
Wipe Down Surfaces
Now, take a damp cloth and give every surface a good wipe down. This includes countertops, the outside of your washing machine and dryer, and shelves. For stubborn grime or detergent spills, a mixture of equal parts water and vinegar will come in handy.
Deep Clean the Washer
Start by running an empty cycle with hot water and 2 cups of white vinegar. This helps in removing detergent residue and any other buildup. After the cycle finishes, wipe down the drum and the rubber seals.
Refresh the Dryer
Firstly, clean out that lint trap! Not just the mesh part, but the compartment it sits in as well. Every once in a while, use a vacuum with a narrow attachment to suck up any additional lint that might be lingering deeper inside. Additionally, check the exterior vent and clear any lint or obstructions.
Organize
Now that everything is sparkly clean, it’s a perfect time to organize. Get some storage bins or baskets to keep your laundry supplies. Label them if you’re feeling extra organized. Remember, keeping things accessible and at eye level will make your laundry routine smoother.
Sweep and Mop
Finally, sweep the floor to collect any dirt, dust, or lint. Mop it with a floor-safe cleaner to ensure a fresh finish. If you have a drain in your laundry room, make sure it’s clear of debris.
Add Some Finishing Touches
Consider adding a fresh rug or mat in front of the washer and dryer. Not only does this add some flair to the room, but it also provides a comfy standing spot for laundry days. Add a seasonal candle or diffuser, refill laundry supplies and stand back and admire your clean and organized laundry room.
Phew! Your laundry room is now fresh, clean, and ready for action. Remember, while deep cleaning is excellent every once in a while, maintaining cleanliness is just as crucial. Wipe down surfaces regularly, check the lint trap with each load, and take a moment every month to ensure everything is in order. Your clothes (and your future self) will thank you!

Thank you. My laundry area is in the garage and when I start to do this I start to feel so overwhelmed because it’s time to clean out the garage as well. Your list is a great tip to help me focus on one task at a time. It’s not that I don’t have any experience doing this sort of thing: decluttering, cleaning, organizing, focusing. I guess I’m just more stressed out than usual. Thank you for your help. It’s so nice that you have the time to do your website. I’m sure I’m not the only one who really appreciates your helpful tips.

What type of cleaner can be used to scrub gunk and grime from the rubber seal on the washing machine? I was thinking your all-purpose cleaner with water, soap and alcohol, but then realized the alcohol may not be good for the rubber.
