We all want our homes to sparkle and shine, but sometimes our cleaning efforts or shortcuts can make it harder to clean or take more time in the long run. Here are seven common cleaning mistakes and some tips to help you clean like a pro.

1. Using Too Much Cleaner

The Mistake: More cleaner means a cleaner surface, right? Nope! Using too much can leave behind a sticky residue that attracts more dirt and grime.

The Fix: A little goes a long way. Follow the instructions on your cleaner and use only the recommended amount. If you’re dealing with a tough spot, let the cleaner sit for a few minutes to work its magic before wiping it away.

2. Ignoring the Directions

The Mistake: Skipping the instructions and winging it.

The Fix: Always read the directions on your cleaning products. They’re there for a reason! Whether it’s the amount to use or the type of surface it’s safe for, those instructions will help you get the best results.

3. Using One Cloth to Clean

The Mistake: Cleaning your entire house with the same cloth or sponge.

The Fix: Use different cloths or sponges for different areas to avoid cross-contamination. Color-coding your cleaning cloths can make this super easy—one color for the bathroom, one for the kitchen, and so on. And don’t forget to wash them regularly!

4. Forgetting to Clean Your Cleaning Tools

The Mistake: Neglecting the tools that do all the dirty work.

The Fix: Regularly clean your vacuum filter, mop heads, and brushes. A quick rinse with hot water and dish soap or a run through the washing machine can do wonders. Most kitchen tools like sponges, Swedish Dish Cloths, and scrub brushes can go on the top rack of the dishwasher for disinfection. Clean tools mean cleaner surfaces!

5. Mixing Cleaning Products

The Mistake: Mixing different cleaning products, hoping for a super cleaner.

The Fix: Avoid mixing cleaners, especially those containing bleach or ammonia. They can produce harmful fumes. Stick to one cleaner per task or use a multi-purpose cleaner designed for various surfaces. You can find my favorite non-toxic AND multi-use cleaners in the shop!

6. Dusting Last

The Mistake: Dusting after you’ve already cleaned other surfaces.

The Fix: Dust first! Dust falls, so starting with it ensures you’re not spreading it around onto your freshly cleaned floors and furniture. This is why we dust on Tuesdays for Dusting Day and vacuum and wash floors Wednesday and Thursday – the order matters!  Use a barely damp microfiber cloth to trap dust instead of just moving it around.

7. Overlooking High-Touch Areas

The Mistake: Forgetting to clean places like light switches, door handles, and remote controls.

The Fix: Make a habit of wiping down these high-touch areas regularly. They’re hotspots for germs and grime. A quick wipe with a little rubbing alcohol on a cleaning cloth will keep them clean and germ-free. This is a Rotating Task in the Clean Mama Routine.
