I tend to hang by item, and then by colour. So when I want that particular white blouse with the wrap-around tie-belt, I know exactly where to look.

Will look into maximising all of my closet space.

I wear a size medium shirt, but most hangars are sized for a large man.

2) I mostly only hang shirts/blouses in my closet, the rest of my clothing is in drawers. But I hang them according to the amount of warmth needed:
far right: sleeveless
left of that: short sleeves
left of that: long sleeves but lighter
left of that: heavier long sleeves
left of that: overshirts (flannel for cold months and rayon for summer but all button-downs)
left of that: sweaters/sweatshirts
left of that: light jackets
left of that: heavier jackets with scarves hanging between those last two
left of that: the skirts I never wear
